The bakers are back in the tent! While the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has halted most television and film production around the world, the cast and crew of The Great British Bake Off secretly began filming a new season of the hit English competition series earlier this month.
As fans of the reality show know, it is usually filmed in a big top built in Welford Park, UK, although the current season is reportedly being shot in a “more COVID-friendly location,” Deadline.
The publication reports that GBBO, which would begin shooting again in April before the health crisis broke out, began filming a new season around July 8. To ensure everyone’s safety, the crew, contestants and judges were all quarantined in the run-up to filming for safe personal contact on set.
Love Productions produces GBBO and Gary Davey, the CEO of Sky Studios, the parent company, revealed that filming has been “going very well so far.”
Jane Millichip, Sky Studios Chief Commercial Officer declined to say much about recent developments, but told attendees at a virtual Broadcasting Press Guild lunch: “It’s all in a deep secret, somewhere in the darkest, deepest Britain in the shires. “
Davey added that the show has a 55-page “bible” with security protocols and is willing to shoot through further coronavirus peaks if necessary. “It would be wise to do that, because it would be really catastrophic to stop another major production midway through the shoot,” he explained.
As for when fans will see more GBBO on the small screen? Davey and Millichip hinted that UK residents are expected to see additional bakers compete for the top prize later this year.
However, since the program is streamed via Netflix in the US (where it is actually known as The Great British Baking Show) a US premiere date is still up in the air. It is even likely that a new season will not fall in America until 2021.
Since it premiered in August 2010, GBBO has crowned 10 winners, including fan favorites Nancy Birtwhistle and Nadiya Hussain. The last baking champion of 35 even had the opportunity to cook prince william and Duchess Kate in December 2019 as part of a televised Christmas special, and reportedly has a new show featuring Queer Eyes Tan France in the works.
