Haunted by a ‘pure evil’ ghost

A geneticist has revealed how he and other students were “terrorized” by an “evil spirit” in the same college room in a chilling new podcast series that claims to be “the greatest investigation of the paranormal ever.”

Ken, now in his sixties, recalled an evil force haunting his bedroom at Queen’s University in Belfast in the 1980s, flying cutlery, stalking empty hallways and trying to “smash the door.”

For three years, three groups of students staying in room 611 in Alanbrooke Hall reported supernatural occurrences, including friends who believed their dreams had been hijacked by the police.

Speaking with presenter Danny Robins on BBC Radio 4 podcast CreepyKen explained that he later learned that at least three former occupants of the room had died, including one who was allegedly pushed out of the window.

Ken, who grew up in rural Northern Ireland, said he doesn’t believe in ghosts but has never been able to explain what happened to him 40 years ago.

“Things start suddenly and very dramatically,” he recalls. ‘It was the middle of winter. I had gone to bed, James had gone to bed too.

My eyes were open and something caught my attention. I saw a large black window sill by the desk of what I had the impression was a man. The first thing that struck me, as I analyzed this data as much as possible, was that I had never seen anything so black. It was the blackest black I had ever seen.

“At the same time, two things happened: I could hear what can only be described as very, very loud white noise and there was also a very, very strong sense of pure, distilled evil coming from this figure.

‘It felt like a force of nature. There was a sense of all that is good, all that is called hope was gone. It was complete and utter despair. I felt it come through me in waves.

“When I looked past the bed, I saw ripples on the blankets that matched this force movement. And I thought “what the hell is going on?” I also thought that this evil was specifically against me. This thing definitely wanted to hurt me. It started to drift towards me.’

When it came to his shoulder, his adrenaline shot in and he “lunged” at the figure. At that moment the whole figure was gone.

Startled, he turned to his roommate James, who said he had also experienced something he couldn’t explain.

‘[James] said something completely different,” Ken continued. “He had his eyes closed, he was lying in bed, trying to sleep, he saw a bright spot. This bright spot grew bigger and bigger in his mind’s eye. He could see the back of a man’s head. This man turned and gave him a very dirty look and then disappeared.’

Like Ken, James had a strong sense that this man, who appeared to be a young student like her, wanted to harm him, and he described it as one of the most disturbing things he’d ever witnessed.

More horror followed the next night. It was a Friday and everyone had gone home for a weekend. Ken told how he was reading a book when he heard the sound of the elevator nearby.

The elevator stopped on the floor I was on and I could hear the doors open… At that moment I felt the same force of evil, this time coming from my left side, where the elevator was. I immediately heard very loud footsteps, as if they were wearing boots with nails at the bottom

“I thought, okay, so there’s someone around,” he said. “Then the elevator stopped on the floor I was on and I heard the doors open and I thought, ‘That’s strange, maybe someone will come up to me’.

“At that moment I felt the same force of evil, this time from my left side, where the elevator was. I immediately heard very loud footsteps, as if they were wearing boots with nails at the bottom, they were that loud.’

The “feet” stamped down the hall to his room and stopped in front of his closed door.

“And then there was that deep silence,” Ken continued. “It probably lasted a millisecond, but it felt like one of the longest silences ever.

“And then the door began to bang. It was like being kicked at the door, banging at the top and bottom at the same time. It felt like multiple fists were slammed against the door and it was extremely violent. I saw the door shake.’

Once again his instincts took over and with the adrenaline rushing through his body, Ken opened the door.

“There was nothing,” he said. “The sense of evil was completely gone. Complete silence. I saw that the elevator had stopped on the floor, so I knew I hadn’t imagined the elevator would be somewhere else, but no one was there.

‘There was no light in any of the rooms, I knew there was no one on the floor anyway. There was no one there.’

Ken later learned that the two students who had stayed in the room the year before had also experienced unexplained events. They told him they had seen books come off the shelf and fly across the room.

The following year, to test the theory that the room was the source of unexplained activity, Ken did not tell the two new residents about what he or the others had experienced.

A few months after they arrived, they approached Ken, as he had done with the residents before him, to ask if he’d noticed anything unusual.

The new students talked about having dark and violent nightmares. Eventually the nightmares evolved to the point where one student would have a nightmare and continue that same night by the other.

Pieces of cutlery or other sharp instruments were placed next to the bed, arranged in such a way that they could hurt themselves if they got out of bed

Then came “poltergeist activity.” “Knives and forks flew across the room,” Ken said. “Pieces of cutlery or other sharp instruments were placed next to the bed where they would put their feet, arranged in such a way that they could hurt themselves if they got out of bed and they regarded this as something evil. The students didn’t stay in the room long after that.

Ken explained that if it had been an isolated incident he experienced, he could have attributed it to “some sort of hallucination.”

“But what happened in that room happened to several individuals, often at the same time,” he continued. ‘I’m really trying to explain this physically.

‘What would the sight of that particular thing explain? What would explain feeling that power? I try to rationalize it sometimes, but I can’t rationalize it.’

Desperate for an answer, Ken spoke to the janitor who had looked after the hallways for years. She told Ken and James that she had always felt uncomfortable in the room, that there was a presence she couldn’t explain.

She also revealed that there had been three previous occupants of the room who had died while in college, including one who was shot and killed on his way to or from Mass in the early 1970s. A second fell from the window in an apparent suicide, although there were rumors that he had been pushed.

Ken described it as a “remarkable coincidence” and wanted answers. The podcast called for information from anyone who had a theory about what happened — or had their own unexplained experiences in room 611.

But parapsychologist Caroline Watt, of the University of Edinburgh, said there could be a logical explanation for what Ken had been through.

‘One possibility is tohere is something in the environment that affects people in the room, such as electromagnetic activity or infrasound. We know that low-frequency sounds in the environment can trigger emotions in people, a sense of presence and sometimes a sense of fear. So I started thinking about what a source of infrasound could be.

“I was thinking about the elevator. It has a large amount of electrical activity driving it somewhere that will create electromagnetic activity and it can also create infrasound in the way it moves.”

She added: “So that could create terrifying experiences, ghost experiences. I think I’d like to know where the power source for the elevator is.’
