Harry Maguire says Manchester United must find a way to regroup following the investigation into their 5-0 humiliation by Liverpool.

The United captain was one of several players who came under fire for his performance at Old Trafford last Sunday, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinging to his job as a manager.

The United players held a meeting in Carrington on Tuesday and, in a frank exchange with the coaching staff, discussed what they think is wrong and how they can solve their problems.

Midfielder Paul Pogba apologized to his teammates after being sent off. The French international, who is expected to leave at the end of his contract next summer, felt even more regretful as he had been asked at halftime not to do anything reckless only to receive a red card 15 minutes later. Pogba will miss Saturday’s trip to Tottenham when a three-game suspension begins.

“It’s hard to get past one, but we have to keep going,” Maguire said. “It’s been a tough week, obviously, you can’t just put these things aside, especially when you lose to your opponents. Losing the way we did was very disappointing.

“Obviously we have had great discussions, we have analyzed the game and the goals and we have seen how we can do better and improve.”

The nature of United’s defeat and recent performances in general has left their maligned coaching staff pondering the tactical changes and how their messages can get through more clearly.

The mood has been understandably bleak around Carrington. Sir Alex Ferguson, former captain Bryan Robson and the likes of David Gill and Martin Edwards were at the club’s training ground this week as designer Paul Smith fitted them into the new club suits.

All have offered their support to Solskjaer and believe that a change of coach would cause too much disruption at this stage. They believe that a tougher approach from Solskjaer and adjustments in tactical focus could prove more effective in the short term as the club’s board continues to assess the situation and which candidates could have a significant impact.

United players have questioned some training instructions, but Maguire and seasoned figures like Cristiano Ronaldo have insisted on the need for unity if they want to recover quickly.

“We know that as a group of players we have to make sure that we are together and we are positive,” Maguire, 28, told ManUtd.com.

‘There are many games to play in the Premier League, we are in a strong position in the Champions League group and we are still at the beginning of the season. And it’s a season where we know we can still get things done.

‘That’s the most important thing now, we have to come together as a group and a club. We know that our fans will be with us and they will come to Tottenham on Saturday, as I said, they will be there in their numbers and I am sure they will be singing and chanting and they will be with us and behind us. ”

Solskjaer will face the media at 1.30pm on Friday, fully aware that another loss at Spurs will put United’s board under more serious pressure to make a change.
