Gary Neville: criticism of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius was wrong

GARY NEVILLE: I went too far when I said Loris Karius was not good enough for Liverpool and got into a fight with Jurgen Klopp after the goalkeeper’s mistake at Bournemouth … As a decent, professional human being, I surpassed the mark.

Gary Neville admitted he “went too far” in his criticism of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius five years ago after his comments sparked a dispute with Jurgen Klopp.

It was December 2016 that German goalkeeper Karius, then 23, fired a tame Lewis Cook shot in Nathan Ake’s way in the third minute of stoppage time to gift Bournemouth a 4-3 win.

Speaking at Sky’s Monday night football The next day, Neville said: ‘It’s difficult to win the league without a good goalkeeper… he’s not good enough as a goalkeeper.

“He seems nervous and he’s not good enough.”

Klopp defended his goalkeeper and suggested that Neville was unqualified to talk about players on television after his struggles as Valencia coach.

Karius, speaking with Sportsmail At the time, he said, ‘I don’t care what Gary Neville said. He was a top-tier player, then he was a coach for a while and now he’s back to being an expert again.

“But he is always very critical.”

Now, five years later, Neville has admitted that he was wrong to be so critical of Karius.

“ I think I overstepped myself once as an expert when I attacked a player who was beyond what he should have done as a former pro, coach and owner, ” Neville said in an exclusive interview with Sportsmail.

‘I think I am a respectable human being. I thought I had gone too far with Karius. I said Liverpool would never win the league with him.

Then he criticized me and so did Jurgen Klopp. No problem.

Now I look back and I think I criticized the boy too much for his age, his position.

In fact, I think he was right. They signed Alisson and [Virgil] van Dijk and won it [the Premier League]. But that doesn’t mean I should have.

“I think Gary Neville, as a decent and professional human being, knowing how difficult it is to play for United and Liverpool, he went too far.

‘Even when [Luis] Little Suarez [Branislav] Ivanovic and some experts said that was his end in England, I defended him in Monday night football.

‘I’ve been in the dressing room where the players have done things. Not bites, but things.

“I want to finish my career with integrity and I will not ask for players or coaches to be expelled from clubs, not from performances anyway.”
