On TODAY Monday, James Michael Tyler, who played sardonic coffee shop clerk Gunther on “Friends,” discussed his struggle with prostate cancer, which he was diagnosed with in September 2018.
Tyler told TODAY’s Craig Melvin that the infection had progressed to other regions of his body since it had not been diagnosed early. Tyler added, “I was diagnosed with severe prostate cancer that had gone to my bones.” “For almost three years, I’ve been living with that diagnosis… It’s the fourth stage (now). Cancer in its latter stages. So, you know, it’ll definitely catch up to me someday.”
Gunther was a Central Perk coffee shop employee who had an unrequited passion for Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel Green. This led to a ten-year career on Friends, when he appeared in 148 of the show’s 236 episodes, making him the most frequently appearing guest star.
