Former surfing star Chris Davidson has died after an alleged assault outside a pub on the NSW mid-north coast.
Davidson was allegedly punched in the face and fell to the ground, hitting his head and knocking the 45-year-old unconscious Saturday night, police said.
Emergency services were called to Sportsmans Way in South West Rocks just after 6pm.
Davidson was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Kempsey Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Davidson, who represented Australia in surfing, lived in the South West Rocks.
Police arrested 42-year-old Grant Coleman at his home about 30 minutes after the alleged assault. He was charged with violence resulting in death. He was refused bail and was due to appear in Port Macquarie Bail Court on Sunday.
A crime scene was established at the scene and was examined by a forensics team on Sunday morning.
