Fairphone 4: the most sustainable and ethical telephone in the world adapts to the new times

It is the ethical motive par excellence. His first device was a hymn to sustainability and repairability, and those same values are preserved in the new one. Fairphone 4 5G.

There are many new features of a phone that is more ambitious than ever in terms of performance and cameras, but that although it is still super repairable it also makes the odd notable sacrifice: for the first time we say goodbye to the headphone jack.

Design: that camera module is deceiving (a bit)

Those responsible for Fairphone have never stood out for offering state-of-the-art devices in hardware specifications or in design, and that is again fulfilled with a device in which fireworks are not in their lines or design detailsbut on your repairability options.

The third circle is not used at the moment in the Fairphone 4 5G, but a replaceable camera module may appear in the future that will take advantage of it.

Still there are differential elements. The front is more reminiscent of terminals from a while ago, especially since the upper frames and especially the lower chin are clearly visible, and the drop-shaped “notch” of the frontal webcam it is adopted in a terminal that, as we say, focuses on other things.

"This is not a mobile phone, it is something else". Interview with Miquel Ballester, of FairPhone

At the rear, the camera module has a unique and somewhat misleading design. It seems that we have three sensors, but in reality there are two: one main and one ultra wide angle. The third “circle” is not a sensor, but the manufacturer may offer a replaceable camera module in the future that will take advantage of it.

That design is certainly not the most advanced in the world, and in fact it is noticeably thicker than its competitors with those 10.5 mm, but Fairphone explained how to make it thinner or integrate, for example, more advanced components (such as an OLED screen ) would have compromised repairability and would have had a higher cost.

“The most sustainable phone in the world” is also repairable and even a bit modular

One of the clear objectives when developing their mobiles has been the sustainable use of materials. The new Fairphone 4 makes use of ‘Fairtrade certified’ gold, responsibly sourced aluminum and tungsten, and also recycled tin.

Back cover it is created with 100% recycled polycarbonates, and that effort also extends to the processes of obtaining these minerals and the manufacture itself.

There is also a clear commitment to reducing waste: it is about “first neutral mobile in electronic waste“This means that for every Fairphone 4 another phone or an equivalent amount of electronic waste is recycled through its recycling programs in Africa and Europe.

The objective of the Fairphone 4 (like that of its predecessors) is that this sustainability and repairability is also translated in a longer life cycle of these mobiles.

The managers of the company highlighted how they offer a five-year guarantee and with this they want to try to give an opportunity for that cycle go from the usual 2-3 years to 5 or even more years that the Fairphone 4 can withstand thanks among other things to its modular design and its repairability.

Leap in performance for a mobile that is now more ‘futureproof’

The Fairphone 4 specifications have also taken a significant leap from previous models, although there are obviously some characteristics that we will have to give up with this terminal.

For example on the screen, which has a diagonal of 6.3 inches but it has the traditional 60 Hz refresh rate. The processor is a more than decent Snapdragon 750G accompanied by 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of capacity that we can expand through the microSD slot.

The Fairphone 4 has a nanoSIM slot but also eSIM support to be able to have two lines on the same phone. The pre-installed operating system is Android 11, and Fairphone ensures the update to Android 12 and Android 13 but they also hope to support Android 14 and Android 15 in the future.

That promise is not a waste: this year they updated the Fairphone 2 to Android 9, something that does not seem too spectacular until we realize that this mobile launched with Android 5.

The battery, as in previous models, stands out for being removable and replaceable —You can buy another one at its official store for 29.95 euros—, and the mobile also supports fast charging: it is possible to charge 50% of that battery with the charger (included and with double port) in 30 minutes. The Fairphone 4 is IP54 certified, allowing it to be used without problems in weather conditions such as rain or snow.

The set of cameras, as we said, is made up of two 48-megapixel sensors, a main one with aperture f / 1.6 and another ultra wide angle with aperture f / 2.2. Image stabilization also allows you to record videos without sudden movements affecting the result. The 25 MP front camera and f / 2.2 aperture complete that photographic set.

A compromised decision has probably been the removal of the minijack. They have justified it by the inclusion of the antennas or a larger battery, but they say that this intention to make this mobile last for many years has mainly influenced it and they believe that in the future the focus will be on wireless headphones.

However, they pointed out that it is still possible to use minijack to USB-C adapters to use those types of headphones, and they actually include this adapter in the product box.
