It has been almost 10 years since my cardiac arrest, in a Bolton against Tottenham game, and incidents seem to be happening more than ever already with high profile players.

Iker Casillas has been at Porto, the current conversation about Sergio Agüero who has had heart problems, Daley Blind at Ajax and Christian Eriksen, of course.

We’re supposed to be the fittest, but more is happening. If it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.

There is complacency. We have a high profile incident, we talk about it a lot and we think we have fixed it. But that is not the case.

Italy’s approach is interesting. They have different rules about what happens after a heart problem that means you can’t play. Prevention is better than cure.

Stay off the court.

After an episode like that, it’s not about you anymore. You have a family and you are putting a lot of people at risk every time you play.

Much work can be done to train young people to help if someone goes into cardiac arrest.

It should be compulsory to learn how to do this in schools. There should be a defibrillator in every building.

We have to be proactive, have updates once a year so that it is always fresh in people’s minds how they can help if they find themselves in that situation.

I try not to relive what happened to me. It is a memory that I do not want to visit again. What happened to Eriksen brought it all back.

But I am here, I am grateful that I had the proper medical care. We cannot lose sight of the importance of this issue.
