Max Verstappen was dramatically downgraded five places on the grid for the Qatar Grand Prix in a huge boost to Lewis Hamilton’s world championship dreams.

It took the stewards an age to determine the penalty and the verdict came just an hour and a half before the start of the race in Doha. Verstappen sinks from second on the grid to seventh.

The case against Verstappen was left open and closed after he failed to meet the double-wave yellow flags, meaning he must slow down, in the final agony of qualifying on Saturday.

Pole-sitter Hamilton, who is 14 points behind Verstappen with three races, including the Qatar round, said: ‘Consistency is key. I got a grid penalty for a single wave flag that I didn’t see. It is good that they stick to the book.

Hamilton’s teammate, Vatteri Bottas, was penalized three places for the same infraction, just the minor yellow flags from a single wave. Go from third to sixth.
