Emma Raducanu’s troubles continued when the US Open champion crashed into Wang Xinyu in the knockout stages of the Linz Open on Tuesday.

The British teenager was playing in her last tournament of the year, and third since winning the US Open, and was hoping to rediscover her triumphant form after her quarter-final loss at the Transylvania Open.

But Raducanu, who broke into the world’s top 20 earlier this week, was beaten by 106th-ranked Wang (1-6, 7-6 (0) 5-7).

The Briton was the favorite and was expected to move quickly to the round of 16, but Wang proved impossible to beat and swept to win the first set.

The Chinese player forced Raducanu to save a series of break points and serve twice to stay in the match in the second. But the British sensation edged out Wang in a tiebreaker.

The pair strongly contested the final set, but Wang refused to compromise on his dominance of the game, ultimately securing victory.
