Eddie Hearn has revealed plan B for Anthony Joshua’s return should a proposed mega fight with Tyson Fury fall by the wayside.

Joshua has received an unexpected lifeline from Fury, who called the former heavyweight champion to a Battle of Britain earlier this week, despite his recent defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.

After a second straight defeat to Usyk last month, AJ faced the prospect of slowly getting back on track for another world title, but WBC king Fury has instead offered him an immediate chance at redemption.

A 60/40 scholarship split in favor of the Gypsy King has already been accepted by Hearn, although the date for their potential blockbuster so far has proven to be a stumbling block.

And in the event that a showdown with Fury fails, Hearn says Joshua will return in December against the likes of Filip Hrgovic, Zhilei Zhang or Otto Wallin – before targeting a rematch with Dillian Whyte in 2023.

“He wouldn’t want a soft touch. I think that would work against him,” the Matchroom boss said DAZN’s boxing show about their Plan B.

‘It’s a top 10 man; you could take him out of the rankings yourself. As soon as I start naming names, the price goes up. The last thing AJ wants is a gimme fight.

‘We are not interested in gimme fights. It must be a risk element. Look at the top 15. Dillian Whyte is not a fight for December, but it is a fight for March and the summer, 100 percent. It is a large stadium in the United Kingdom.

‘You have Filip Hrgovic. He just won. I think it’s a bad performance from him. Zhilei Zhang looked good. Otto Wallin had a very close fight with Tyson Fury.

‘Dillian is a very good fighter; he is a dangerous fighter. I’d like to give Dillian a fight in November, and then I’d make the AJ fight, depending on the Tyson Fury stuff.

“These guys need to get active. Dillian fought in March 2021 and his next fight was in April 2022. These guys, AJ included, have been fighting once a year due to Covid due to commitment rematches. I want to get them active.

“AJ who fights every three months will be a tough man to beat once that confidence is gone, once that faith in his training team is gone. I spoke to AJ last night and his message is clear. “If He Is” [Fury] seriously, let’s do it.”

“Like I said, originally the plan was December, February, March, and that could be Dillian Whyte or Fury or Wilder or all those guys.”

Joshua avenged his amateur defeat to Whyte in December 2015 when he knocked out the Brixton fighter after seven reckless rounds at the O2 Arena.

Both men are currently reeling from high-profile setbacks, with Whyte also suffering a knockout loss to Fury at Wembley in April.
