  • Tea Sinseers among bands known as “Chicano Soul” or “Chicano Soldies”
  • Dee Sinseers are from East Los Angeles

“It’s definitely meant to be a reminder,” said Joseph Quiñones, lead singer of Thee Sinceers, an East L.A. band.

Quiñones brought the band together a few years ago. He spoke to Spectrum News 1 about the group at Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights.

The music genre of Thee Sinseers combines the words soul and oldies. It is also referred to as lowrider oldies due to the popularity of the music in the lowrider music scene.

“It’s soul music in general and from East Los Angeles and because we are Chicano we just got into that category of Chicano oldies so it is really cool to wear that flag for the community and our culture and our music, the most important thing, “said Quiñones.

For Quiñones, it was his family that partially influenced his love of soul music. He grew up at car shows with his father who has been in a car club since the 1970s.

“I remember going to the car shows and being very young and bored, but I remember shaking my head a lot, I certainly remember that,” said Quiñones.

Although he may not have known it at the time, it was those songs that would influence the sound of Thee Sinseers.

“It was like, ‘I know this song’, I don’t know how I know this song, but I know. You know it was just an easy match, my mom was a big Motown girl and my dad was really into war and El Chicano and stuff like that, so I got there early, ”said Quiñones.

The Sinseers will perform during the Latin Alternative Music Conference 2020. The LAMC presents Latin American music. The event typically features panels and discussions during the day and live music at night, but this year’s conference is going virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We just hope that the performance translates well, because it is absolutely difficult to capture a live performance or just a performance without an audience, because we sometimes rely on that,” says Quiñones.

The advantage is that the event is more accessible this year because it is offered online. It is an opportunity for audiences around the world to taste Thee Sinseers.

You can view Thee Sinseers at the LAMC showcase by registering for the LAMC conference.

Registration is free.
