Derbyshire has made a bold attempt to recruit Sri Lankan coach Mickey Arthur as its new cricket boss.

Arthur, 53, is out of contract with the Sri Lankan board next month and is Midlands County’s first choice to succeed Zimbabwean Dave Houghton, who resigned at the end of the 2021 season.

Arthur has extensive experience on the international circuit as head coach of his native South Africa, Australia and Pakistan before taking up his current role in December 2019.

Although a young Sri Lankan team failed to reach the semi-finals of this Twenty20 World Cup and play their final match of the tournament against the West Indies on Thursday, they have earned praise for their freedom of expression with Arthur, who previously led Pakistan. a Success of the Champions Trophy, as well as the number one place in cricket Test and T20.

However, after the better part of 16 years on the international circuit, it is known that he is open to a job in the county as his next career move.

Middlesex is also looking for a new cricket director after firing from Stuart Law last month.

Derbyshire reached the final day of Twenty20 under Houghton in 2019, but won just six matches in all competitions last summer, the fewest of any county, and has since lost all-rounder Matt Critchley to Essex.
