Amber Heard’s sister denied yesterday that she lied to a London court after Johnny Depp’s lawyers in his defamation lawsuit against a British gossip magazine presented video footage alleging that his ex-wife was violent against her.
The Hollywood star’s legal team said they received the video Thursday night, hours after Whitney declared Henriquez in court, from a “ confidential ” source that she had never been attacked by Heard and was not afraid of her.
Depp, 57, sues News Group Newspapers, the publisher of ‘The Sun’, and the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Dan Wootton, for an April 2018 article that the actor called a ‘woman beater’. Depp has told the court that he was the one abused by Heard and that she was violent against him in the past.
The defense of ‘The Sun’ is based on 14 Heard’s allegations of violence by Depp between 2013 and 2016, in environments as varied as a rental house in Australia, his private island in the Bahamas and a private jet.
The video that took center stage in the lawsuit yesterday, the last session before the two sides summed up their arguments, was unused reality TV footage from 2006 or 2007, according to Depp’s attorneys, showing Henriquez by a pool with a group of girlfriends. One of them is heard, “Have you had a fight or something?” and “I can’t believe Amber beat you up.”
Another seems to be inspecting Henriquez’s cheek and arm, and Henriquez says she’s not going to talk about it.
After watching the video in court, Henriquez said the argument with her sister was “verbal” and her friends “were trying to make a very boring story more interesting.”
Henriquez also denied that she had any injuries when the video was being recorded, saying that her friends “were looking for injuries that weren’t there, trying to create a story to make something interesting.”
Depp’s lawyer, David Sherborne, had previously said that it is “fairly clear” that Heard attacked her sister and that Henriquez’s injuries are being investigated on the tape.
Henriquez is a crucial witness in the trial, as she reportedly saw Depp beat her sister.
In her testimony on Thursday, Henriquez said Depp beat Heard “several times” during an alleged incident at the couple’s Los Angeles apartment in March 2015. She also said that her sister Depp had beaten on that occasion, but only to kill her. because she believed Depp would push Henriquez down the stairs.
Depp’s lawyers have said that Henriquez has modified her evidence to accommodate her sister’s version, particularly around the “trap” incident. “Our case is that she lied to support her sister on this very important issue,” said Mr. Sherborne.
In her four days of testimony this week, Heard (34) accused Depp of a series of violent crimes, especially when he was reportedly high on drugs or drunk. These include throwing bottles at her “like grenades”, pushing headbutts and a cigarette on his cheek. She claimed that during their stormy relationship, she often feared for her life.
Heard said in written evidence that some incidents were so serious that she was “afraid he would kill me, either intentionally or simply by losing control and going too far.”
The actress told the court that Depp blamed his actions for “a self-created third party” whom he called “the monster.”
Depp and Heard married in February 2015 in Los Angeles. The following year, Heard filed for divorce and was finalized in 2017.
After 14 days already in court, the case will be closed next week with closing submissions from both parties’ legal teams on Monday and Tuesday.
