An altercation on Twitter sparked after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ opening win of the new NFL season against the Dallas Cowboys (19-3), when two players from both teams traded beef over the legality of a chip block.

Tampa Bay running back Leonard Fournette brutally waded into Dallas linebacker Micah Parsons with one minute left in the second quarter of Sunday’s game. The hit came when Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady threw and completed a 48-yard pass to Julio Jones, leading to a field goal that gave Tampa Bay a 12-3 lead.

Before the block, Parsons had broken into the left side of the Buccaneers’ forward line and engaged in a bull-rush tackle with Josh Wells. Fournette then tackled the right shoulder to Parson’s chest, dropping him onto the field.

It remains unclear whether Fournette’s strike on Sunday was intentional or malicious and has yet to be judged by the league, as cameras picked up the footage on Sunday Night Football.

Barely an hour into the game, Parsons took to Twitter to lash out at Fournette.

“Now go watch the tape!” Parsons wrote about midnight Monday. ‘And look what happened when me and he were one on one!!! You hit someone who doesn’t look you straight p****y !! Stop hype this weak a** s**t it’s football’

The 23-year-old later responded to his tweet with another comment after interacting with several retired players online.

“I’m writing it down!” he added. ‘It’s an attacking competition!! Attack doesn’t sell tickets defense! They don’t protect defenders!! That’s not a chip, that’s a blind side hit, it’s 260 [pounds] put his whole shoulder and head in my ribs and neck, foh!! That is not true!!’

“There’s nothing to be upset about, it’s FOOTBALL!!,” Parson last tweeted about the tackle. ‘Crack blocks happen!! You are all so funny!!!’

Fournette responded to his opponent’s online rant Monday afternoon with a crying Michael Jordan meme, which he clearly aimed at Parsons complaining about the shoulder block.

And after the game, the 27-year-old former LSU player said he was just doing his “job” when asked about the chip block.

‘It’s not really satisfying, but I have’ [Brady] over there,” Fournette told NBC Sports. “We must protect him with our lives. We know he can lead us and what he can do with the ball in his hands when he feels comfortable, so that’s my job.”

However, Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller gave his two cents on the chip block, stating Monday that the move should be illegal.

‘This block must be out of the game!’ Miller shared on Twitter. “This is the future and we’re going to beat off the offensive on our big passers! You can get the job done without so much contact!’

Fournette and Parsons both had great games on Sunday. The Buccaneers running back had 21 rushes for 127 yards. Parsons was a defensive juggernaut for the Cowboys, who managed to have five tackles and two sacks on the board.

A chip block is defined as a fast hitting block usually performed by a receding or tight end before being released in a route, In the Pylon’s Football Glossary points out. The technique is often used to designate edge rushers to change their routes from firing the quarterback.
