Professional cyclist Desiet Kidane Tekeste died at the age of 21 in a traffic accident in her home country of Eritrea.

The young cycling star was reportedly training at her home in the city of Asmara, Eritrea, when a car ran over her and killed her.

Desiet Kidane was looking to stay active amongst the competition and was building a reputation as a rising star since winning gold in the time trial at the African Junior Continental Championships in 2018.

News of the 21-year-old’s death soon brought a wave of tributes with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) leading the way on social media.

The UCI wrote: ‘With his constant smile, kindness, respect and deep passion for cycling, Desiet Kidane Tekeste was a young rising talent that we will miss very much.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fellow @WCC_Cycling coaches during this tragic time.”

Furthermore, the World Cycling Center (WCC) wrote: ‘Words cannot express our sadness upon hearing the passing of 21-year-old UCI WCC athlete Desiet Kidane Tekeste from Eritrea. We will miss you Desiet. ‘
