LOS ANGELES – For actress and director Bryce Dallas Howard, her father is also her hero. So it’s fitting that her directorial debut for feature films is called ‘fathers’ – she calls it her gift to fathers everywhere.
“My dad was and is such a good dad,” said Bryce Dallas Howard. “I wanted to say that he cares about everything he cares about, but he also cares about movies.”
He may care about movies, but her father, filmmaker Ron Howard, was reluctant to star in this movie.
“He thought it would be really unpleasant for a girl like I just made a movie about my dad! And he’s also a producer, ” Howard quipped.
But when the shooting started, they found out that her brother and his wife were expecting their first baby, so in the end her brother and her father also became part of the movie.
In the documentary she shows what fatherhood looks like through the eyes of her father and brother and also of various other fathers, including some well-known comedians and actors.
And she also had a lot of praise for her husband, whose parenting skills have constantly impressed her, she said.
“I will never forget the moment my son was born, my husband took Theo and he took off his own shirt so he could sit skin to skin and he whispered in his ear and I heard him and he said time and time again anything is possible Howard said.
With this film she wants to tell fathers everywhere that it is not always easy.
“We live on a planet where the role of a father as a parent is nowhere near as valued as the role of the mother as a parent,” said Howard.
But the role they play in a child’s life can help shape them forever, she said. The film may reflect the love she has for her own father, but it truly is a love letter to all dads.
“I feel very, very, very happy and I think my confidence is partly good because of that,” said Howard.
