Freiburg had started to attract attention across Europe, as alongside Liverpool, Napoli and AC Milan they were the only undefeated teams left in the majors.

But this was always going to be the toughest test to date for Christian Streich’s team and Bayern wasted little time creating opportunities while adjusting to their pace.

Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken made good early saves to deny Niklas Sule and then Alphonso Davies as Bayern signaled their intentions to cut the upstarts.

They duly found a well deserved opening goal after half an hour with Goretzka played selflessly to score for Thomas Muller after Freiburg carelessly lost possession, not from the edge of the area.

The visitors decided to sit deep and absorb the pressure from Bayern after the break as they looked for a counterattack, but almost conceded a second when Goretzka nailed the post with a low shot behind Leroy Sane’s dummy.

Goretzka was close moments later, but Lewandowski secured Bayern’s victory in the 75th minute with his 60th goal of the calendar year, a shot from close range after a good job from Davies on the left.

Although Haberer retired one in injury time, Bayern remained awaiting another victory.
