Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu revealed that he was ready to move to North London rivals Tottenham on the day of the transfer deadline in the summer.
The Japanese international, who turned 23 on Friday, has impressed in his seven appearances with the Gunners following a £ 20 million move from Bologna on the window’s final day in August.
The versatile defender signed a four-year deal at the Emirates Stadium, but was also linked to a move to Spurs during the summer window before they signed Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

But Tomiyasu has now revealed that he believed he would end up signing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium instead, only for talks to break down and he linked up with Mikel Arteta’s side once the Gunners called.
“ I thought I couldn’t join Arsenal, ” he said told DAZN Japan through Goal..
‘I thought he was going to the Spurs. On the day of the deadline, the movement failed. Arsenal asked me to join them and I did so immediately. ‘
Tomiyasu was the target for his versatility, providing coverage for 50 million pound center-back Ben White in the center-back position, as well as his more natural right-back position.
White recently spoke about Tomiyasu’s talents in an interview with Astro SuperSport, saying, ‘He’s such a nice guy. It fit perfectly when it arrived. All the boys love him and he is doing his job on the court too. He’s doing really well. ‘
But now he has revealed that he was scheduled to join the Spurs on the day of the deadline before the move broke down.
Spanish coach Arteta has also been “delighted” with Tomiyasu’s adaptation to English football, and believes he is helping the team stay calm under pressure.
Speaking after last weekend’s 2-0 win at Leicester, Arteta told Arsenal’s official website: ‘I’m delighted to have him, first of all as a person, he’s a great character.
“He’s doing everything right, he’s a great professional and I think he’s giving us a lot of composure on the baseline, the way he defends and understands the work we want to do with him.
‘So it’s been at the top. His adaptation to being a defender in this country, the way he has done it, I think he deserves a lot of credit. “
Tomiyasu has yet to register a goal or attend his new club, however, but he hopes to change that when the Gunners face Watford at Emirates Stadium on Sunday in their final match before the international break.
Tomiyasu’s versatility to cover center-back Ben White (R) was considered key for the Gunners
