Anthony Joshua promises WAR in Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch and admits wrong tactics

Anthony Joshua has vowed to bring the fight to Oleksandr Usyk in his rematch after a lackluster performance in his loss to the Ukrainian in September.

The Briton gave up his WBA, WBO and IBF titles in a unanimous unanimous decision loss at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving many stumped when he chose to box the boxer, rather than use his obvious physical advantages.

Promoter Eddie Hearn was quick to confirm that Joshua had activated his contractually agreed rematch clause, with the pair set to go into battle once more early next year, likely in March.

And Joshua, who insists his wasted days are over, has promised to bring a different mindset this time.

‘I’m done with losing,’ said Joshua iFL TV. ‘I’m done with trying to learn sweet science.

‘I just put it all together now and I’m rolling with it. If you like it, come see it. If you don’t, don’t look.

‘Whether the referee likes my style or not, I could be thrown to the floor in the next fight because this is a war. Boxing is good, but when it comes to 12-round championship fights it’s insane.

‘I am heading into my twelfth world title fight now and the learning is done. It is war, it is pure war. I’m upset.

“I’m boiling even talking about it, I’m starting to cheer up a bit, it’s that passion for winning and I love challenges.”

Joshua fell to his second loss in 26 starts, the first in a clash loss to Andy Ruiz Jr when he made his United States debut in 2019.

The heavyweight altered his style for the rematch, reclaiming his belt collection with an impressive boxing display, highlighting Ruiz on the outside as he danced to a unanimous decision victory.

Joshua’s more measured approach continued in his subsequent outing against Kubrat Pulev, although the Briton showed more spite by securing a stoppage in the ninth round.

But against Usyk, largely due to the Ukrainian’s relentless lateral movement, Joshua was unable to assert his superior size, strength and punching power.

However, he insists that won’t be the case next time, and promises a more violent display.

He said, ‘I have one thing on my mind and that’s war, that’s murder, just go out there and hurt the guy and bring his soul to the point where he wants to give up.’ That’s what boxing is all about.

‘I learned that if you constantly hit people and keep applying the same amount of pressure, then they will realize that you are not going anywhere and that you are here to stay.

“ That’s all I have on my mind right now – that track and staying the course and taking this guy to places he doesn’t want to go. ”

While Usyk received widespread praise for his brilliant performance, many implored Joshua to leave trainer Rob McCracken after a questionable approach to the fight.

Joshua has now confirmed that he is looking to bring a new face after his US tour, in which he visited prolific trainers Virgil Hunter, Eddy Reynoso, Ronnie Shields and Robert Garcia.

He has also shed light on the tactics used in the first fight against Usyk, admitting that they got the game plan wrong.

I’m a 12 round fighter and you saw him in the other fight (Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder) a few weeks after that, after two or three rounds the energy ran out.

‘It’s not really, what I thought, the right way to box. I started working on different elements of my boxing and on the same boxing in the first round as in the twelfth round, learning to slip and throw better.

“The obvious thing was to go out there and use a lot of my natural ability, but after a while in my career I started to think that I wanted to discard what I can do naturally and improve certain areas where I was weaker.”

He continued: ‘It is definitely not wasted time: I learned different things, the importance of the jab, the importance of the push and the feint, the difference between countering and countering … I just got popular in the sweet science of boxing.

But with that fight, it is clear that styles make fights, and I adopted the wrong style.

“That is not to say that next time I will go out and swing like crazy, but I have certain strengths that will cause a lot of trouble for him and many other people.”
