Andy Murray’s extraordinary persistence paid off Monday night when he scored his first top-ten win of the season.
The 34-year-old Scotsman, desperately seeking a race to climb the rankings, defeated Wimbledon semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-7 6-3 to reach the second round of the Vienna Open.
Murray had to dig deep once more when he missed a second match point before winning in two hours and 41 minutes over the world number 10.

He might have been put off losing another tiebreaker to one of the top twenty players, but he bounced back in the decider, giving his metal hip another full workout.
By winning, he did compatriot Cam Norrie a favor as Hurkacz is one of the newest British No. 1’s main rivals to claim one of two remaining spots at next month’s eight-man ATP Finals in Turin. Norrie faces Hungarian Marton Fucsovics today in his bid to become a rare qualifier for the year-end championships.
Murray bounced back from an early break in the third set, swallowing the disappointment of losing his sixth straight tiebreaker against one of the top twenty players.
The two-time Wimbledon champion now faces the passionate Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz, who previously defeated Dan Evans 6-4 6-3. Murray beat the same player this month at Indian Wells.
