AC Milan 1-0 Torino: Olivier Giroud scores his fourth goal in six Serie A games to send unbeaten Stefano Pioli to the top of the table
- Olivier Giroud scored point-blank at the back post in the 14th minute
- AC Milan have won nine and drawn one of their first 10 Serie A games
- Milan are three points ahead of Napoli, who play Bologna at home on Thursday.
French forward Olivier Giroud’s first goal earned AC Milan a narrow 1-0 victory over Torino on Tuesday to place Stefano Pioli’s side at the top of the Serie A standings.
In an uneventful first half, Giroud, starting in place of another veteran Milan striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, scored his fourth Serie A goal of the season at home for what turned out to be the winner in the 14th minute.
Torino’s Italian forward Andrea Belotti, in his first start with the club since August after recovering from injury, had the visitors’ best chance to equalize in the second half, but missed his shot with the goal at his mercy.
Forward Olivier Giroud scored the only goal in AC Milan’s win against Torino on Tuesday night.
Milan goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu retained his team’s lead at the end with a good save to deny Torino substitute Antonio Sanabria as the hosts opened a three-point gap at the top of the table over Napoli, which host Bologna. Thursday.
Torino is 13th with 11 points.
“I think we played a good game,” Giroud told DAZN. “Torino is a strong team, they are aggressive at tackle.
“I am very happy because we did well from the beginning and Torino did not threaten many scoring opportunities. That means we have been very solid at the back and we take all three points, that’s the most important thing.
Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Giroud scored from close range in the 14th minute
‘We play every three days, that’s not easy on the body. Not everything was perfect. ‘
Before the game, coach Pioli had warned his team that they had to start winning ugly if they wanted to take the next step and win the Scudetto this season.
And they won ugly, as, after Giroud’s goal from the Rade Krunic movie, they didn’t create another meaningful opportunity.
That mattered little, however, as Milan have won nine of the first 10 Serie A games of a season for the first time since the 1954-55 campaign.
