David De Gea was in his prime to help secure a winning start for Michael Carrick as Man United caretaker, making a stop for his highlight reel.
Villarreal put pressure on United in Spain and had to wait for Cristiano Ronaldo to force a breakthrough in the 78th minute, after De Gea kept them in the game.
The Spanish stopper, fighting for his place, reacted strongly to stop a forceful blow from Manu Trigueros in the 58th minute, sending the ball to the post.

Owen Hargreaves praised the goalkeeper on BT Sport: “I thought David was the most influential player, especially in the first half.
‘They were under a little pressure from Villarreal, we know they believe. David, this season has been fantastic. He had a tough game against Watford, as did many players, but David made big saves.
‘David created the platform for them to go and win the game. They made some nice changes, but David was the one with his normal form.
‘They are saves he should make, but they are important saves. I think it gives the players a bit more confidence ”.

De Gea has made a determined effort to regain his best level and is securing his place
De Gea was consigned to the bench for Spain’s run to the Euro 2020 semi-final after a terrible season for United, and came into the season under pressure from Dean Henderson for the No. 1 spot.
De Gea returned to preseason early and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been with him since the start of the season, and the 31-year-old has begun to show flashes of his best.

‘Special mention to David De Gea. Absolutely monster today, ‘added @BreezyUTD.
Rio Ferdinand was equally impressed: ‘I I think there was a nervousness early in the game, which was to be expected given the form.
‘You need, behind the defense when you are going to rape, someone like that, who is going to make those saves. He has been his most consistent player this season, alongside Cristiano.
“There is no way you can achieve great results away from home without your goalkeeper playing well most of the time. You need them to step up. ‘
