BEIRUT (AP) – A massive explosion shocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday, injuring a number of people and causing extensive damage.
The afternoon blast shook different parts of the capital and thick smoke came from the city center. Residents reported that windows were blown out and false ceilings fell.
The explosion appeared to be centered around Beirut Harbor, causing widespread destruction and shattered windows for miles away.
An Associated Press photographer near Beirut Harbor witnessed people injured on the ground and widespread destruction in downtown Beirut.
Some local TV stations reported that the blast occurred in Beirut harbor in an area where fireworks were stored.
