Director Martin Scorsese & # 39; mob-epic & # 39; The Irishman & # 39; was named best photo of the year by the National Board of Review.

The prize for the vast drama, in which Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci play, gives Netflix a boost in his constant efforts to get his very first Oscar for the best image.

But in what has been a fairly wide open Oscar race so far, the organization of the critics has also spread its love to other toppers. Quentin Tarantino was named best director for "Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood," which also gave Brad Pitt a supporting actor win. Renée Zellweger earned the best actrice prize for the Judy Garland biopic "Judy". Adam Sandler, considered a long-shot for an Oscar nod in a competitive year, earned the best actor prize for his turn as a diamond trader in the gonzo crime drama "Uncut Gems."

The selections of the NBR are a precursor to a whole series of other prizes and nominations that will soon appear when the Oscar season starts in a higher gear. Later this week, film critic associations from New York and Los Angeles will announce their year-end lists. The Golden Globes nominations are announced on Monday, with Screen Actors Guild nominations landing two days later and other major guild nominations following in January. With an unusually accelerated schedule, the vote for Oscar nominations will open on January 2.

Founded in 1909, the NBR describes itself as a "select group of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals and academics of different ages and backgrounds," although the taste of the group is often at odds with groups of other critics and industry organizations.

Last year the top choice of the NBR, & # 39; Green Book & # 39 ;, won the Oscar for the best photo. But in general, while the best movie choices from the National Board of Review have often yielded the best image nodes, they have only occasionally predicted the final winner.

The honorees are played at the NBR Awards Gala, organized by Willie Geist, on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 in Cipriani 42nd Street.
