The casting of an actress of color for the role of Andy reflects the discussion in the fashion industry about diversity and inclusion since the release of the film.
"Everyone is firmly committed to creating an updated version of the beloved story," said David Furnish, one of the producers of the musical. "The show must reflect the cultural and social changes that the fashion world have redefined since Lauren Weisberger wrote her novel more than 16 years ago."
Anna D. Shapiro directs the production, based on Weisberger's hit film and bestseller 2003. The creative team consists of Elton John as a composer (and producer), Shaina Taub as a text writer and Paul Rudnick as a book writer. James Alsop – known for her work with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Janelle Monáe – takes part in the production as a choreographer.
The musical has its world premiere at the Chicago CIBC Theater from July 13 to August 15, 2021. Additional casting and creative team members for the Chicago production and future Broadway plans will be announced later.
