Whit Merrifield indicated on Thursday that he has been vaccinated against COVID-19 and will be allowed to play for Toronto when the Blue Jays return to Canada.

Merrifield was acquired by Toronto on Tuesday in a trade with Kansas City for two minor leaguers. The two-time All-Star was in the starting lineup in midfield on Thursday night for his first game with his new team in Minnesota.

“I’ll be in Toronto when the team gets to Toronto,” Merrifield said, without saying when he got the vaccine.

Merrifield was one of 10 Royals players who were not vaccinated last month, preventing them from making their trip to Toronto.

When asked about his decision, Merrifield angered Kansas City fans by saying, “Something is happening and I happen to be on a team that has a chance to play in Canada in the postseason, maybe that will change.” ‘

Merrifield added that he was hesitant about the vaccine’s effectiveness, saying: ‘What it’s supposed to do, it doesn’t. If it did what it was supposed to do and stop the spread of COVID [then] I’d be a little more willing to take it, but it doesn’t.’

He later backtracked on his comments and apologized for “poorly articulating” the point he was trying to make.

“It was something I probably could have handled a little better,” Merrifield said on Thursday of his July comments.

“But what happened, happened. I’m excited to be a Blue Jay. I look forward to going to Toronto and playing at the Rogers Center as my home.”

Toronto leads the AL wildcard standings as it tries to make it into the postseason for the second time in three years.

The next home game for the Blue Jays is August 12 against Cleveland.

Toronto manager John Schneider said Merrifield will be playing in different positions almost every day, most likely second base and center.

“It’s a luxury to have a man like that that you can literally put anywhere and feel comfortable with,” said Schneider.

“The days he doesn’t start, he’s probably going to play. I think now with a bank like this we can be a little more aggressive in certain places we haven’t been earlier this year. Definitely an asset to have.’
