It is the 2000 cult film about a bar run by a group of beautiful women, which was watched by millions around the world.

But Kiwi actress Melanie Lynskey has revealed the dark side of the romantic musical Coyote Ugly.

Lynskey made the bombshell claim that she was embarrassed on the set of the film.

The 45-year-old said starring in the cult classic was not a pleasant experience, as a crew member who initially worked on it constantly told her “you’re not beautiful.”

Lynskey told The Hollywood Reporter that it was a particularly demanding shoot as female cast members were given “ridiculous” diet regimens to follow.

“I was already starving myself and being as thin as I could possibly be for this body, and I was still a size four,” she explained.

The New Plymouth resident said she was under constant surveillance by crew members.

She added that she received “very intense feedback about my physicality, my body” and that the crew members were constantly trying to mold her into what they wanted.

Lynskey played Gloria, “Jersey’s best friend” in the film, which stars Piper Perabo as Violet Sanford, an aspiring songwriter who moves to New York City and lands a job at a female-run bar.

Lynskey noted that Perabo came under even more scrutiny when the film starred, recalling “the way people talked about her body, talked about her looks and focused on what she was eating.”

Earlier this year, Lynskey told: rolling stone she had a similar experience while filming Yellowjackets, saying that a member of the production team asked her how she planned to lose weight before filming.

“They asked me, ‘What are you planning to do? I’m sure the producers will give you a trainer. They would be happy to help you with this,'” Melanie told the publication.
