The prices of sausage rolls and steak bakes at Greggs will rise, the High Street bakery chain warned.

The company said its ingredients, packaging and utility bills all skyrocketed in the first half of the year, with costs for the entire group set to rise a total of 9 percent this year.

So far, the chain has added up to 10 cents to the price of some products since the beginning of the year, but said it has “worked hard” to absorb as much of the cost as possible.

But customers are not deterred. Yesterday’s results showed sales rose 27 percent in the six months to 2 July to £694.5m, from £546.2m a year earlier.

But despite huge sales, the company was plagued by the return of corporate rates, the VAT hike and rising inflation, and profits remained broadly stable at £55.8 million.

AJ Bell’s Russ Mold said: “The danger for Greggs is that people are making their own packed lunches instead of grabbing food and drink on the go, but there’s little sign yet that that shift is happening on any scale.”
